about

Joe Strummer was an early musical hero. I saw a documentary of his life called the future is unwritten a few years back that traced his musical development to a phase as a hippie before finding his voice in the passion and rage of the London punk scene in the seventies. “I started out a hippie and I ended up a punk… punk rock is an attitude, the don’t give me any bullshit ‘cause I can see right through to the heart of the situation attitude. Because I’m wise to the tricks of the world. We’re sick of all the bullshit. Give us some truth. That’s the energy of punk rock” - It’s really the energy of early rock n roll and folk protest songs in the sixties as well. By Joe’s definition, Dylans Masters of War and Subterranean Homesick Blues are punk songs which sits right with me. In my Joe Strummer dream, I sit with Joe by a campfire at the edge of the city and we’re singing songs and howling at the moon, a primal expression of creativity and longing for connection. That’s what really attracted me to writing and singing songs in the first place, that primal connection. And suddenly I’m older and driving my car alone through the desert wondering what any of this life’s been about and listening to Joe’s Coma girl as loud as it can go. And singing and making music is about as close to making sense of it as I can get

My Joe Strummer Dream

Joe Strummer was holding a black cat
In my dream he wore an old bowler hat
sitting by a campfire he says
boy why you worry bout that
Joe Strummer he wore an old bowler hat
and he said ohh it goes by so fast

There were people singing pass the jug around
we were high and nothing could bring us down
sitting by a campfire he says
boy that is a beautiful sound
we were high and nothing could bring us down

and he said ohh it goes by so fast
you've got to learn how to let go
it's not meant to last
learn to forget everything
it's into the fire we sing
watch it all fly past
now you're home at last

In the desert twilight driving all alone
turn up coma girl as loud as it can go
So much has happened to me
that I can't begin to see
in the desert twilight driving all alone

and he said ohh it goes by so fast
you've got to learn how to let go
it's not meant to last
learn to forget everything
it's into the fire we sing
watch it all fly past
now you're home at last

Joe Strummer was holding a black cat
in my dream he wore an old bowler hat
ohhh it goes by so fast
